How to Become A Utility Worker

utility worker

If there’s one thing that people are always going to need, it’s electricity. Australia is also in the midst of a shift towards more renewable energy sources. This creates a significant number of jobs, especially due to the infrastructure required to support renewables. As such, becoming a utility worker is a great way to build a career.

In this article, we’ll look at what ESI workers need to do to kickstart their careers.

Training to be a utility worker

To be a utility worker, you will need to undertake some electrical training. You must be able to register as an ASP level 1 at the minimum, and this requires training. The best course to take is an ASP Level 1 pathway, which gives you the qualifications to register as an accredited service provider (ASP). We’ll touch on the importance of this shortly.

In addition to your initial electrical training, you also must complete refresher training. This occurs each year, and you must complete the training to maintain your ASP registration.

Registration with the ASP scheme

The NSW Department of Trade and Investment administers the ASP Scheme. You can register at different levels, such as ASP 1 or ASP 2, and this depends on the type of training you’ve completed. Different levels perform different duties, so it’s a good idea to plan accordingly. Your job opportunities may be limited if you don’t attain the right ASP level.

In order to register as an ASP, you must complete all the necessary electrical safety training. Once you can show evidence of your competency, you may apply in writing to become an ASP. You’ll also need to be endorsed by one of the three electricity distributors in NSW. These are Endeavour Energy, Essential Energy and Ausgrid.

Finding employment opportunities

Once you’ve obtained your qualifications, it’s time to find a job. There are a number of ways to do this. You can work directly for one of the electricity distributors mentioned above. You can also work for other companies that sub-contract to the main players. But finding those jobs isn’t always easy.

Another option is to register with an electrical employment agency. These agencies place skilled electrical workers in electrical supply industry (ESI) jobs. Sign up, and let the agency know you’re keen and ready to work.

Consider electrical labour hire

If you haven’t had any luck finding a full-time position by yourself, why not consider an electrical labour hire? When you work in labour hire, the agency places you in short or long-term contracts with other ASPs. The electrical labour hire company pays your wages, while you go to work each day for a host employer. It’s a great way to get your foot in the door, gain experience and make good industry contacts.
